Americans' wealth growing

Real estate holdings account for 30% of net worth. Individual stocks make up 14% of net worth. Mutual funds make up 8% of net worth. Bank accounts, checking accounts and other savings products make up nearly 14% of net worth. The balance includes retirement accounts, bonds and possesions such as cars and jewelry.

According to estimates by Jack VanDerhei of the Employee Benefit Research Institute, 86% of people with 401(k) retirement savings plans now have more money in their accounts than at the market peak in October 2007.

The Fed said overall household debt dipped to 13.4 trillion in July-September period. That's a 3.5% drop from a peak in early 2008. Debt now accounts for 122% of Americans' disposable income, down from a peak of 135% in late 2007.

2. Joshua Wesson, cofounder of Best Cellars wine shops, tops his ice cream with flaky Maldon salt. He loves how it focuses the flavors. We lve it on Haagen-Dazs Sticky Toffee pudding.
3. Called "Ammo" these hand-tied spice bundles from Art of Tea make a potent after-dinner tea or a stomach-soothing drink.
4. Our list of creative uses of Ashbolt Elderflower Concentrate keeps growing. So far we've used it in Champagne cocktails and to make sorbet. Next. we'll poach pears in it.
5. Branche's black Mission fig preserves are so luscious and figgy that we almost prefer them to fresh fruit.
6. Compass Box founder John Glaser stopped by to share his latest blend: Oak Cross, a pleasantly soft and sweet malt whiskey aged in premium American and French oak.
7. A friend tipped us off to this intensely meaty, slightly spicy beef jerky from Striplings General Store in southwest Georgia

Recent Vacant Street Corners

Many streets venders set up their stands on empty street corners. On weekends, for example you can set up a large stuffed toy animal display in front of a gas station or vacant lot at any busy intersection. Pay the property owner for the use of this part of his property, perhaps $25 for four weekends,

To find a good location, look for a spot that is highly visible on a busy thoroughfare, with easy access from and back onto the road. An out of business convenience store or gas station is ideal. Most property owners will be happy to rent you the space for just enough money to cover property tax.

Truly low cost start-up

Park in front of any busy supermarket and sell plastic tablecloths or leather handbags.

Set up a velver-covered tray on any busy street and sell custume jewelry.

.......Anxious to get your life on a more prosperous track, the possibilities are designed to minimize your initial cash investment,

To attract customers, place notices on bulletin boards, put fliers under doors. You can even go door-to-door. After a while, you will have steady clientele, especially of working individuals who don't have time to shop.

Getting the flavor of . . . . .

Saratoga Springs' artistic roots
While known for its horse racing and hot springs, Saratoga Springs, N.Y., has a third attraction that's always fascinated me, said Cheryl Lu-Lein Tan in The Washington Post. The little city near the picturesques Adirondacks" is also home to the "storied artists' colony" Yaddo, a retreat that's been "fertile ground for thousands of creative spirits" since its 1900 founding. The colony has been a haven for Sylvia Plath, Saul Bellow, Langston Hughes, and Carson McCullers, among other luminaries. In total, Yaddo alumni have won 64 Pulitzer Prizea, 61 National Book Awards, and one Noble Prize. "Many believe that the creative powers of Yaddo lie in the 400 scenic acres of woods and lakes" surrounding it. The "magic of the place" is especially pallable in the Yaddo Gardens, whose "massive beds of pink and yellow roses" are secluded by 100-year-old-pines.

dimension

Now, using all of the colors prevously mixed, go for the final painting in all of the details to your own satisfaction. The orange color spotted here and there is a combination of a little Alizarn Crimson and Cadium Yellow Light. Add some of this orange sparinly to the greens of the trees and grasses. Ripplets on the water are a base of yellow and white we used in the sky. Also, a little Alizarin Crimson and Pthalo Blue were added for the light purple. Keep this scene soft as the colors, even though bright in places, dictate the soft mood. Yellow is the dominant color and purple is the dark accent.

Notice that the warm richness of the yellows and oranges against the purple blackness of the background give a velvety feeling to the trunk. This is a good example of the use of a color which appears to be black to the eye and yet very harmonious to the overall painting. Work up to the brightest colors and try to make the brush strokes give a rough appearance to the bark.

Complimentary

olors. . . . Here we find many uses of the color wheel as a mixing guide and also for selecting our color schemes or palettes. The following examples of complements are presented to illustrate the placement of the various colors on the color wheel and the reasoning behind the selection of the different plans.

A double compliment is made up of two sets of the complements with a dividing color in between. Notice the closeness of the blue and green. There s only one color between them and that is blue green. The same applies to the red and orange. The seperating color between them is red orange.

Perspective

is the principle by which an object recedin from the position of the viewer appears, to the viewer, smaller than its true size, and conversely, an object approaching the viewer's position seems more and more to approximate its true size. The knowledge of perspective is an indispensable aid to the artist, who must represent on a flat surface subjects which, in actuality, exist in three dimensionl space. As a test, take a ruler and measure a person forty feet away. As he approaches, see how much larger he seems to become. The test shows the apparent variation in size of an object, depending on its remoteness from or nearness to the viewer.
The vanishing point is that point on the horizon where parallel lines (perspective lines) seemingly converge and terminate. The vanishing point is always on the horizon. Any object within a picture will have perspective lines, though these lines are not visible in the finished drawing.
The horizon line is always on a level with the eyes of the observer, and it changes with the observer's changing positions, as shown in the drawings that follow.
The drawings in this book have been chosen to illustrate the variety of problems which the artist encounters when creating a picture. Study them carefully and then apply the principles which they present when next you make a sketch.

THAT BLANK CANVAS

Being faced with a blank canvas sometimes, is enough to frighten the artist who is going to strike out from realism into the next step; semi-abstraction. A good way to start is to draw with soft charcoal (easily dusted off as you change your mind); begin making shapes, large against small, keeping it simple at first, and trying to get interesting placement of the forms. As you proceed in this book, you will be given many hints on composition and the "breakinbg up of space."

If your subject matter is, say, an interior, as this one is, think of the spaces between objects as flat, having no depth. Put the sofa next to the girl, the girl next to the wall, the walls next to other objects in the room, all of these being SHAPES only, not really girl, wall, sofa, etc. Do not be concerned with detail and reality. If you want detail, create it in your picture space where it will do the composition the most good. (In this case, the sofa pillows, not the girl's face)

Distortion of the figure and the room interior makes this painting very persobal with the artist. turns the realistic forms into new shapes that are more challenging to the imagination. Modern painting is more concerned with what is happening on the canvas that in recording a scene or telling a story

hint

The secret of success in any endeavor is practice and experience. There are times, however, when practice and experience can be capsulized by knowledge gained through examples or demonstrations which tend to minimize the trial and error method.

The gem-like sparkle of a dew drop on a rose, the charm of the mirror-like reflection on a still pond, or the frosty look of a chilled glass all tend to give a little added interest to a painting.

The interpretation of silver, brass, and copper is often called for in a still life painting and will detract greatly from the art if not handled properly. The surface textures of stone are of great importance. Many and otherwise good landscapes has been spoiled by rocks that look like giant baked potatoes.

This Book "SECRETS" is intended to give some hints and suggestions to the Artist, amateur or professional who wishes to add that little something to his work.---------------I hope you will find the information to be of value to you. Fritz Willis

excerpt -THE WEEK

WHEN Children Act this way, we say they're simply acting like children. But when adults behave with this same paradoxal mixture of self-importance and insecurity, we call it something else: narcissism. By definition, narcissists are impatient, vain-glorious, easily insulted, and aggrieved; they'd never dream of making sacrifices on anyone else's behalf, unless it simultaneously advanced on an agenda of their own. But the fact is, everyone is capable of narcissism in times of crisis. It's a very typical response to feeling out of control--especially if you've had plenty of control before (or at least the illusion of it), and especially if you still have some means to express your dissatisfaction. And control has been a defining theme of this election cycle. With record unemployment and foreclosure rates, everyone across the system is feeling deeply disempowered.
Just as in 2008, says New York Jennifer Senior, voters have embraced magical thinking and fairy tales :)

The latest trend in luxury retailing:

Sales prevention It's not often that retailers try to discourage sales, but Louis Vuitton is doing just that, said Scheherazade Daneshkhu in the Financial Times. The luxury retailer has recently been closing its flagship store on Paris' Champs-Elysees an hour earlier than usual, as well as raising prices on some of its signature handbags. Why? The retailer "is trying to sell fewer products and preserve stock for Christmas."

A newly robust appetite for luxury goods, sales of which slumped after the financial crisis, has blindsided other carriage-trade firms as well, including shoemaker Salvatore Ferragamo and sports-car maker Ferrari. But the crunch may be most severe at Vuitton, where supplies will remain tight until the company opens a new factory next year. Says HSBX analysr Antoine Beige, "it's a nice problem to have."

Follow any story in this magazine and, inevitavly, it will lead o science. The price of gas. News of the weather. A glass of clean water.

What makes the news is what unravels the story of human life. And the story of human life is told in the elements hydrogen, oxygen and carbon. In how we bring innovation and judgement to the science and business of chemistry.

The science f chemistry is the simple truth of the bond between hydrogen and oxygen,

The business of chemistry discovers ways to use that knowledge to make an automobile ten percent lighter and seven percent more fuel effiicient.

New ways of looking at the same 118 elements is how science inspires us.

In some ways life is simplke. 118 elements. Governed by the laws of science and chemistry.
It's the future of life that can be daunting. A substainable future for everyone on this planet will take our best innovative thinking nurtured by our most tempered judgement.

The story of science is all around us. Written in our DNA, A cup of coffee. Or even the pages of this magazine. Science is our world. And it is how we've come to think about our world.

The discoveries that helped us understand time and space and gravity still happen in ever-changing frontiers on every day.

And our uniquely human curiosity is piqued when we hear of the unearthing of one of our ancient ancestors or read about snowy weather on Mars.

Science inspires us.

And as you will see on the pages that follow, it is, quite often, all you need to know about everything that matters,

An Article

The people of Chicago, that stormy, husky, brawling kind of town, sure know how to tie on the feedbag. Has any other American city patented so many signature foods? There's deep-dish pizza, smoky Polish sausages, Italian beef sandwiches au jus, and of course, the classic Chicago-style hot dog; pure Vienna Beef on a warm poppy-seed bun with mustard relish, pickled peppers, onions, tomato slices, a quarter dill pickle and a dash of celery salt. Alter the formula (or ask for ketchup) and you can head right back to Coney Island, pal. For better or worse, it was Chicago that transformed the Midwest's vast bounty of grains, livestock amd dairy foods into Kraft cheese, Cracker Jack and Oscar Mayer wieners. And in recent years, emerging from its role as a chuck wagon to the masses. Chicago finally bulled its way into the hallowed precincts of haute cuisine, led by renowned chefs Charlie Trotter, Rick Bayless and Grant Achatz, who's one of the forerunners of a movement known as molecular gastronomy, "They hate the term, but that's how people refer to it." says Mike Sula, a food columnist for the weekly Chicago Reader "The like to calkl it "techno-emotional cuisine." But does it taste good?
"Oh yeah," he says.

To dream of soup

To see snow in your dreams, denotes that while you have no real misfortune, there will be the appearance of illness and unsatisfactory enterprises. To find yourself in a snowstorm, denotes sorrow and disappointment in failure to enjoy some long expected pleasure. There always follows more or less discouragement after this dream. If you eat snow, you will fail to realize ideals. To see dirty snow, foretells that your pride will be humbled, and you will seek reconciliation with some person whom you held in haughty contempt. If you see it melt, your fears will turn into joy. To see large white snowflakes falling thile you are looking through a window, foretells that you will have an angry interview with your sweetheart, and the estrangement will be aggravated by financial depression. To see snow-capped mountains in the distance, warns you the longings and ambitions will bring no worthy advancement. To see the sun shining through landscapes of snow, foretells that you will conquer adverse fortune and possess yourself of power. For a young women to dream of sleighing, she will find much opposition to her choice of a lover, and her conduct will cause her much ill favor. To dream of snowballing denotes that you wil have to struggle with dishonora ble issues, and if your judgement is not well grounded, you will suffer defeat. If snowbound or lost, there will constant waves of ill luck breakin in upon you.

Editor's Note

One of the nicest things about painting details is there availability.
We don't need to take a painting vacation in exotic places to find subject
matter (although that's always a delight too). Subjects abound close by
--look around your backyard, garden, or local park. Consider the potted
plants on your windowsill; be on the lookout for small slices of everyday life.

To pick your subject, look around you slowly. Consider everything, but choose nothing
just yet. Then close your eyes, Something will come to mind. Something has made an
impression. Respond to it in your imagination. Why has this particular subject touched
you? What did you notice about it, what elicited a response? Perhaps is was simply a
special beauty, a sparkle of life or movement. Perhaps a particular angle captured your
imagination, a play of light and dark.

These are the best times

Charles Kenny Foreign Policy

You may not have heard, said Charles Kenny, but the greatest decade in human history is now drawing to a close. True, the first 10 years of the 21st century featured several bloody wars, an earthquake in Haiti, a hurricane in New Orleans, and a worldwide recession - not to mention the worst terriost attack ever on American soil. But in the 'Naughty Aughties," the planet's 6 billion residents "lived better, longer, more peaceful and more prosperous lives than ever before. " Global financial crisis notwithstanding, human beings today earn more than they ever have. Education and lteracy levels rose, while war, poverty, and disease declined. As more people - especially women - have become better educated, child mortality has dropped and life expectancy has increased. Thanks to technology, however, we have become enveloped in a web of media, which enables us to "witness the tragedy of millions" every time some terrible misfortune occurs. That's why there's such a widespread, gloomy view of a truly golden era.

series

No matter what your skill level, you'll find the books of the Artist Library Series to be excellent learning tools.

The 14 books in the series can help you expand your creativity, overcome technical obstacles, or explore new media.
Each compact, 64 page paperback focuses on the materials and methods of different medium, providing stepo-by-step demonstrations, helpful tips, and plenty of encouragement.

Serious instruction for serious artists. That's what Walter Foster's Artist Library Series is all about.

organization

of color

HUE : The name of color. It's as simple as that. This allows us to distinguish one color from another by name.

VALUE: The lightness or darkness of a color. Of all of these three, value is the most important to keep in mind. If the value of a color is wrong then the color is wrong.

INTENSITY: The purity or strength of a color. No color is more pure than when it comes freshly from the tube. Mix any other color or medium with it and you change the intensity.

Even though we tend to take color for granted because we experience it with no mental efort, it is a very individual subject. Not all of us like the same colors. We show our preferences in the ways we decorate our homes and the clothing we select to wear.

Color also creates emotion and can be either soothing or exciting, stirring or calming. You would never see a hospital room painted red. On a cold winter day we think of the warmth of the red/orange flames in a fireplace. During the heat of summer we imagine the cool blue-green of a pool of water. Light and pastel colors are usually more comfortable. A room painted with dark color can be heavy, suppressive and suffocating (?) We see and use color daily without giving it a thought. If there happens to be a dramatic and unusual sunset, however, all eyes are turned skyward, art lovers or not.

In your study of color, I would like to suggest that you do not skip around in this book, but follow it thoroughly, step by step as it has been very carefully organized into a study progression. Hope you enjoy it. COLOR And How To Use It By William F. Powell Walter Foster Publishing

THE WEEK August 27,2010

Quote of the week

"Last night, I did what I always fo when I'm feeling jaded. I got out my boxed set of Mad Men and immersed myself in the hedonistic, glamourous world of Madison Avenue in the 1960's, when all women were a 38 DDD cup, all men drank scotch from lunchtime until bedtime, and everyone chain-smoked and fornicated whenever they got the chance. The show is delightful because of its contrast to the dreariness of modern, straight-laced office life. In the world of Mad Men, judgement was warped by lust and alcohol. But in the puritanical, modern business world, judgement is warped by something more pernicious: fear of lust and fear of alcohol. Both worlds are bad, but the first surely had the edge on the second At least it was intermittently enjoyable.

Child Safety Tips

*Check to make sure seating surfaces and equipment (child safety seat and safety belt buckles) aren't too hot when securing your child in a safety restraint system in a car that has been parked in th heat.
*Never leave your child unattended in a vehicle even with the windows down.
*Teach children not to play in, on, or around cars.
* Always lock car doors and trunks - even at home - and keep keys out of childrens reach.
* Always make sure all child passengrs have left the car when you reach your destination. Don't overlook sleeping infants.

have a great summer
Adult. Safety Tips HEAT
* Slow down, Streneous activities should be reduced, eliminated, or rescheduled to the coolest time of the day. Individuals at risk should stay in the coolest available place, not necessarily indoors.
* Dress for summer Lightwieght light colored clothing reflects heat and sunlight, and helps your
body maintain normal temperatures.
* Put less fuel on your inner fires. Foods (like proteins) that increase metabolic production also increase water loss.
* Drink plenty of water or other non-alcoholic, fluids. Your body needs water to keep cool. Drink plenty of fluids even if you don't feel thirsty Persons who (1) have epilesy or heart, kidney or liver disease (2) are on fluid restrictive diets or(3) have a problem with fluid retention should consult a physician before increasing their consumption of fluids
* Spend more time in air-conditioned places. Air conditioning in homes, and other buildings markedly reduce danger from the heat. If you can not afford an air conditioner spending some time each day (during hot weather) in an air-conditioned enviroment affords some protection.
*Don't get too much sun. Sunburn makes the job of heat dissipation that much more difficult.
*Do not take salt tablets unless specified by a physician.

Marbles

When you were a kid did you ever play marbles? Remember, you drew a circle on the ground and tossed some marbles into it and then using other marbles, started shooting at the ones in the circle. If you knocked them out of the circle, they were yours to keep. -------------
.........................-----------------------......................................----------------------------
You see, It's a Little Known Fact, that marbles was as popular with adults as with children. It was a game that both often shared together, and that's how those players got so good. And at least at one time in our history, the game provided some badly needed entertainment and relaxation while the players were involved in some rather important activities in Philadelphia in July 1776. And don't kid yourself, they were some of the better players and collectors of their time. It's true in their own right, George Washington, John Adams and Thomas Jefferson ...marble champs all!

The Blacksmith

Clink, clink, clinkerty, clink!
We begin to hammer at morning's blink,
And hammer away
Till the busy day,
Like us, aweary, to rest shall sink.

Clink, clink, clinkerty clink!
From labor and care we never will shrink;
But our fires we'll blow
Till our forges glow
With light intense, while our eyelids wink.

Clink, clink, clinkerty clink!
The chain we'll forge with many a link,
We'll work each form
While the iron is warm,
With strokes as fast as we can think.

Clink, clink, clinkerty clink!
Our faces may be as black as ink,
But our hearts are true
As man ever knew,
And kindly of all we shall ever think.

The moon is lighting up the skies,
The stars are sparkling there;
Tis time to shut ou weary eyes,

To all my pretty flowers, good night!
You blossom while I sleep;
And all the stars, that shine so bright,
With you their watches keep

Pots and Pans

Pots and pans are made of a variety of materials. Aluminum pans and copper pans are the best Aluminum and Copper-bottom, cast iron, aecause they heat food evenly - en called for in recipes bt conductors -; however, all copper pans are expensive and tarnish easily while plain aluminum pans can react with certain foods. Therefore, good options for the home cook include
heavy stainless-steel pans with copper bottoms, pans clad with aluminum sandwiched between stainless steel and aluminum pans treated with a process known as hard anodization. Anodization creates a noncorosive cookware that conducts heat well.

Heavy pans are often called for in recipes because they heat foods evenly and gently. Picture yourself walking into one of those huge video stores to rent amovie only to find thousands of films displayed in unmarked cases. Instead of the usual plot synopsis, photos of exciting scenes, and lists of glamourous stars, all you see is the title of the film and a few boring statistics like length and rating. How in the world would you choose one to rent? You'd have to watch a few minutes of each movie to try to find one that was right for you, but with such vast selection available, that would be absurd.

Well, employers would find themselves in a similarly impossible situation if they had to pore over stacks of resumes

Cockles of the Heart

The expression is redundant. "Cockle" is here used as another name for "heart"--from the fact that the cockle-shell and the heart are very much alike. Indeed, the zoological name for the "cockle" is cardium from kardie the Grek word for "heart"Why Do We Say It?

How did lollipops get their name? What's long about a longshoreman? Why do we pass the buck? is also a great way to expand your vocabulary and enjoy doing it.

Lovely

Dreaming of lovely things, brings favor to all persons connected with you.

For a lover to dream that his sweetheart is lovely of person and character, foretells for him

a speedy and favorable marriage.

If through the vista of dreams you see your own fair loveliness, fate bids you, with a

gleamin light, awake to happiness.

Love. Why do we use the word "love" to mean "nothing in tennis ?

The term comes from the French l'oeuf, meaning "egg" because an egg looks like a "0" When the game was imported into England from France the term was also introduced, but its spelling was changed to "love". We sometimes call a zero a "goose egg"

Hobnob. Why do we say two people in intimate conversation are " hobnobbing" together?

The term was once spelled :habnab" and its meaning was "have and not have." As a synonym for "give and take" it's an apt description of an intimate conversation.

Learn by Heart. How does it happen we say we learn things "by heart" instead of "by head"?

It's because of a mistaken analysis of anatomical fundctions made by the ancient Greeks. They

placed the seat of thought in the heart.

worth $1000

Make a picture worth $1,000

Buyers are much more likely to bid and buy when they can see a photograph of the item. Since
your customer can't physically pick up and inspect the merchanduse, you've got to make up for it with illustration. Would you spend much money on something if you didn't know what it looked
like? Probably not. (There are a few exceptions - if you're selling and inexpensive book or video,
you can probably get by with using eBay's "stock" photo of the cover artwork- but even then, you're at a disadvantage with other sellers if you don't back it up with a good description.)

If you don't display a picture of your item, buyers may wonder whether you really have the item in stock, or are hiding some horrible defect. If you don't already use a digital camera, now is the time to get one and learn how to use it. An inexpensive used camera with two megapixels will work just fine for eBay pictures. You should be able to find a suitable camera on eBay for $25 or less.
