Cockles of the Heart

The expression is redundant. "Cockle" is here used as another name for "heart"--from the fact that the cockle-shell and the heart are very much alike. Indeed, the zoological name for the "cockle" is cardium from kardie the Grek word for "heart"Why Do We Say It?

How did lollipops get their name? What's long about a longshoreman? Why do we pass the buck? is also a great way to expand your vocabulary and enjoy doing it.
