THAT BLANK CANVAS

Being faced with a blank canvas sometimes, is enough to frighten the artist who is going to strike out from realism into the next step; semi-abstraction. A good way to start is to draw with soft charcoal (easily dusted off as you change your mind); begin making shapes, large against small, keeping it simple at first, and trying to get interesting placement of the forms. As you proceed in this book, you will be given many hints on composition and the "breakinbg up of space."

If your subject matter is, say, an interior, as this one is, think of the spaces between objects as flat, having no depth. Put the sofa next to the girl, the girl next to the wall, the walls next to other objects in the room, all of these being SHAPES only, not really girl, wall, sofa, etc. Do not be concerned with detail and reality. If you want detail, create it in your picture space where it will do the composition the most good. (In this case, the sofa pillows, not the girl's face)

Distortion of the figure and the room interior makes this painting very persobal with the artist. turns the realistic forms into new shapes that are more challenging to the imagination. Modern painting is more concerned with what is happening on the canvas that in recording a scene or telling a story

hint

The secret of success in any endeavor is practice and experience. There are times, however, when practice and experience can be capsulized by knowledge gained through examples or demonstrations which tend to minimize the trial and error method.

The gem-like sparkle of a dew drop on a rose, the charm of the mirror-like reflection on a still pond, or the frosty look of a chilled glass all tend to give a little added interest to a painting.

The interpretation of silver, brass, and copper is often called for in a still life painting and will detract greatly from the art if not handled properly. The surface textures of stone are of great importance. Many and otherwise good landscapes has been spoiled by rocks that look like giant baked potatoes.

This Book "SECRETS" is intended to give some hints and suggestions to the Artist, amateur or professional who wishes to add that little something to his work.---------------I hope you will find the information to be of value to you. Fritz Willis

a bit if trivia

IN SEARCH OF CINDERELLA

From dusk to dawn.
From town to town.
Without a single clue.
I need the tender, slender foot.
To fit this crystal shoe.
From dusk to dawn
I try it on.
Each damsel that I meet.
And still love her so, but oh.
I've started hating feet.

BEAR IN THERE

There's a Polar Bear
In our Frigidaire-
He likes it cause it's cold in there....................................

BORED
Ican't afford
Askateboard
I can't afford
An outboard.
I can't afford a surfboard.
All I can afford is a board.

STANDING IS STUPID
Standing id stupid.
Crawling's a curse.
Skipping is silly.
Walking is worse.
Hopping is hopeless.
Jumping is a chore.
Sitting is senseless.
Leaning is a bore.
Running is ridiculous.
Jogging is insane ---Guess I'll go upstairs and
Lie down again.

excerpt -THE WEEK

WHEN Children Act this way, we say they're simply acting like children. But when adults behave with this same paradoxal mixture of self-importance and insecurity, we call it something else: narcissism. By definition, narcissists are impatient, vain-glorious, easily insulted, and aggrieved; they'd never dream of making sacrifices on anyone else's behalf, unless it simultaneously advanced on an agenda of their own. But the fact is, everyone is capable of narcissism in times of crisis. It's a very typical response to feeling out of control--especially if you've had plenty of control before (or at least the illusion of it), and especially if you still have some means to express your dissatisfaction. And control has been a defining theme of this election cycle. With record unemployment and foreclosure rates, everyone across the system is feeling deeply disempowered.
Just as in 2008, says New York Jennifer Senior, voters have embraced magical thinking and fairy tales :)

The latest trend in luxury retailing:

Sales prevention It's not often that retailers try to discourage sales, but Louis Vuitton is doing just that, said Scheherazade Daneshkhu in the Financial Times. The luxury retailer has recently been closing its flagship store on Paris' Champs-Elysees an hour earlier than usual, as well as raising prices on some of its signature handbags. Why? The retailer "is trying to sell fewer products and preserve stock for Christmas."

A newly robust appetite for luxury goods, sales of which slumped after the financial crisis, has blindsided other carriage-trade firms as well, including shoemaker Salvatore Ferragamo and sports-car maker Ferrari. But the crunch may be most severe at Vuitton, where supplies will remain tight until the company opens a new factory next year. Says HSBX analysr Antoine Beige, "it's a nice problem to have."

The

Follow any story in this magazine and, inevitavly, it will lead o science. The price of gas. News of the weather. A glass of clean water.

What makes the news is what unravels the story of human life. And the story of human life is told in the elements hydrogen, oxygen and carbon. In how we bring innovation and judgement to the science and business of chemistry.

The science f chemistry is the simple truth of the bond between hydrogen and oxygen,

The business of chemistry discovers ways to use that knowledge to make an automobile ten percent lighter and seven percent more fuel effiicient.

New ways of looking at the same 118 elements is how science inspires us.

In some ways life is simplke. 118 elements. Governed by the laws of science and chemistry.
It's the future of life that can be daunting. A substainable future for everyone on this planet will take our best innovative thinking nurtured by our most tempered judgement.

The right decisions about food and water and energy will happen at the intersection of science and humanity. And they will be made by those who see life through the eyes of the
Human Element.

The story of science is all around us. Written in our DNA, A cup of coffee. Or even the pages of this magazine. Science is our world. And it is how we've come to think about our world.

The discoveries that helped us understand time and space and gravity still happen in ever-changing frontiers on every day.

And our uniquely human curiosity is piqued when we hear of the unearthing of one of our ancient ancestors or read about snowy weather on Mars.

Science inspires us.

And as you will see on the pages that follow, it is, quite often, all you need to know about everything that matters,

An Article

The people of Chicago, that stormy, husky, brawling kind of town, sure know how to tie on the feedbag. Has any other American city patented so many signature foods? There's deep-dish pizza, smoky Polish sausages, Italian beef sandwiches au jus, and of course, the classic Chicago-style hot dog; pure Vienna Beef on a warm poppy-seed bun with mustard relish, pickled peppers, onions, tomato slices, a quarter dill pickle and a dash of celery salt. Alter the formula (or ask for ketchup) and you can head right back to Coney Island, pal. For better or worse, it was Chicago that transformed the Midwest's vast bounty of grains, livestock amd dairy foods into Kraft cheese, Cracker Jack and Oscar Mayer wieners. And in recent years, emerging from its role as a chuck wagon to the masses. Chicago finally bulled its way into the hallowed precincts of haute cuisine, led by renowned chefs Charlie Trotter, Rick Bayless and Grant Achatz, who's one of the forerunners of a movement known as molecular gastronomy, "They hate the term, but that's how people refer to it." says Mike Sula, a food columnist for the weekly Chicago Reader "The like to calkl it "techno-emotional cuisine." But does it taste good?
"Oh yeah," he says.
