The Energy Department strives tfo be a leader in championing energy efficiency. It's Web site
lists energy-savings tips, while Secretary Steven Chu calls conservation one of the department's most important goals. But at many of the agency buildings, even as national laboratories where
talented scientists seek technological break-throughs to save energy, the department has failed to use one of the simplest most effective ways tools avaiable to any ordinary household --- ther-
mostats that automatically dial back the temperature when nobody is around. A recent audit found the the Energy Department could save more that $11.5 million a year by properly employing setback controls to adjust the heat and air conditioning at night and on weekends.
