Josephine Cochran's automatic dishwasher, invented in 1893, was at first a hit only with hotels
and large restaurants. But it wasn't until Kitchen Aid introduced the appliance that the public came to know the invention . Then in the 1950s the electric dishwasher became widespread as a
labor-saving device.
In 1907, Arthur Scott of the Scott Paper Company introduced Sani-Towels to keep illness
from being passed along in Philadelphia classrooms. It wasn't until 1924 that Kleenex was
born. Its original mission was to remove makeup. Today this indispensable classic is used to
wipe everything from runny noses to dusty keyboards.

Marshmallows
Rev. Sylvester Graham, a U.S. dietary reformer, developed in the 1830s the Graham cracker
first baked as a health fod snack. But its profile (and ours) has been enhanced by the addition
of toasted marshmallows and chocolate to produce S'mores, a not particularly healthful snack
- but who cares.
Charles Strite in 1919 invented the automatic pop-up toaster. Strite got the idea for the
appliance after being fed up with burnt toast served in his company cafeteria. It wasn't until
1926 (four years before Wonder Bread introduced sliced bread) that the Toastmaster --
an automatic, put-in-the-bread,set-the button toaster-became available for home use, thus
providing time for a variety of morning pleasures.
